The Bermuda Road Safety Council [BRSC] will hold its annual road safety week from May 15 to 22.
A spokesperson said: “The Bermuda Highway Safety Council would like to extend its condolences to all of the families who have lost loved ones on our roads this year. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
“May is upon us and our slogan is – 2 wheels, 4 wheels, 1 road for all. In Bermuda, we all share one thing in common, and that is to travel our roads. Whether you’re driving from Somerset to St. George’s or from your home to the store, you have to travel on the road.
“Every road user shares the road with other road users and as such we all play our part in road safety. Vehicles with 2 wheels, 4 or more wheels and even pedestrians all share equal responsibility on the roads.
“Under the TCD Highway Code Handbook – Duties to other road users, 2-wheeled vehicles” must drive in single file whenever road or traffic conditions so require, and never more than two abreast”. This includes motorcycles and pedal bicycles on public roads.
“Pedestrians, whether they are running or walking, have responsibilities when they are on the roads. Wearing shiny or reflective clothing, facing oncoming traffic while walking or running are among the duties of pedestrians on the roads.
“Vehicles with 4 or more wheels are larger and more powerful than 2-wheeled vehicles and caution should be exercised when traveling near them. Not only drivers, but also passengers have the responsibility to ensure that a driver is focused on the road and not distracted.
“With the Bermuda Day holiday fast approaching, the BRSC would like to remind motorists to drive with care, caution and courtesy, to slow down and not to drink and drive. We all need to do our part to keep our roads safe.
“From May 15-22, 2022, the BRSC will host its annual Road Safety Week. The theme for this year’s Road Safety Week is “Drive to Survive”. Each day of the week will consist of a road safety topic that we will focus on and we encourage the public to visit the BRSC Facebook and Instagram @bdaroadsafetycouncil for more information. We would also like to invite the public to our open Road Safety Week event which will take place on Monday, May 16, 2022 at City Hall from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
