Talk with The TeamJean-Marc Mickeler, the boss of the DNCG (National Directorate of Management Control), the financial regulator of French football, assured that “there is no risk of bankruptcy” for Ligue 1 clubs this season, despite the Covid pandemic and the Mediapro broadcast fiasco.

However, “we ask ourselves questions” on select clubs for next season, Mickeler continued. “We need to reinject 500 million euros into the system, a third of which in the form of equity contributions from shareholders. So there is definitely a risk.” for those who do not have sufficient funding capacity, he explained.

Mickeler expects net losses of “about 600 million euros” for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 teams for the current season. This figure is slightly better than the 645 million euros lost over the year. The slight improvement is partly thanks to the strong sales in the January transfer window, totaling 100 million euros.

“We are still on an operating deficit of around 1.2 billion euros for the current season. This is considerable”, said Mr. Mickeler.
